Southwest Saudi Arabia: A Scenic Odyssey Through Nature's Bounty
Join us on an unforgettable journey through the stunning landscapes of southwest Saudi Arabia, where rugged mountains, serene valleys, and pristine coastlines await exploration. From the rose city of Taif, via mountains and villages around Al Baha and Abhá, to the idyllic shores of Farasan Islands, this itinerary promises a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
This itinerary is a self driving itinerary based on arrival to and departure from Jeddah. However, you can also fly to and from Jazan, saving some 1000 km of the return journey.
Day 1: Arrival to Jeddah
This five million inhabitants strong city has very good connections to many major airports and low cost airlines fly to Jeddah too. As Jeddah is a pretty large city, I suggest you leave exploring the city for the last day or two of your itinerary and move to your destination in the south straight from the airport.
Pro tip: While Saudi Arabia is crazy hot between April and October, large part of this itinerary runs in the mountains. Altitudes between 1000 and 3000 meters above seal level will keep you cool, even in the summer. In the winter, do not be surprised by occasional snow.

Day 6: Rijal Almaa - Architectural and cultural Gem
- We visited Rijal Almaa as a day trip from Abha. This UNESCO World Heritage site and a cultural is a true gem of southwestern Saudi Arabia. Beautifully preserved traditional architecture, with its intricately carved wooden facades and ornate balconies, kept us busy for hours.

Accommodation in Rijal Almaa in close to none. There is a café in front of the museum which offers accommodation in Rijal Almaa. This place is not bookable online and is not even on google maps (as of December 2024).
This makes a trip to Rijal Almaa a one day return trip from Abhá. Or you can schedule your visit to Rijal Almaa as stop on the way to from Yazan.
- *Elevation:* Rjal Almaa is slightly above 1,000 metres above sea level. Going to or from Abhá, you will cross Al Soudal, a misty town on a hilltop, at 3000 metres above sea level. Day 7: Wadi Lajib - Canyon Adventure
- Departing from Abha, we ventured to Wadi Lajib for a spectacular canyon experience. The towering rock formations and narrow canyon walls reminded us of the Siq in Petra, just with no tourists in sight. We had winding riverbeds of Wadi Lajib just for ourselves, as we hike through this natural wonder.
- With 4WD you can drive deep into Wadi Lajib canyon. We had a decent 2WD, still I did not want to drive along the path covered in water, so we left our car kind of half way deep into the canyon.

- *Travel Time:* Around 1-2 hours.
Day 11: Day Trip to Fayfa
- Next day we took a day trip from Jazan to Fayfa,, a picturesque mountain town renowned for its stunning scenery and traditional architecture.
- We explored the winding streets, visited local markets, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. We reach various viewpoints and the highest point in the town to admire majestic vies all the way to the neighboring Yemen.
- *Travel Distance:* Jazan to Fayfa (Approximately 150 km), *Travel Time:* Around 2-3 hours.
